Thread veins and rosacea — what actually works.

By Anne · Lumos Skin, Basingstoke  |  5 minute read

Facial thread veins and persistent redness are two of the most common skin concerns people bring to my clinic — and they are also two of the most misunderstood. There is a lot of misinformation about what causes them and what treatments genuinely work, so let me set the record straight.

Thread veins vs rosacea — what is the difference?

Thread veins (also called telangiectasia or spider veins) are tiny blood vessels that have become permanently dilated and visible near the skin's surface. They look like fine red or purple lines, most often on the cheeks and around the nose. They are purely a cosmetic concern — harmless, but noticeable.

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that causes persistent redness, flushing, and sometimes visible vessels and breakouts. It is driven by genetics, environment and triggers like temperature changes, sun exposure, alcohol and spicy foods. IPL can manage the redness and visible vessels that come with it, but rosacea itself is a lifelong condition rather than something that can be cured.

The important difference: thread veins can be cleared permanently (though new ones may form), while rosacea is managed rather than cured. Honesty about this matters, because it shapes your expectations and your treatment plan.

What causes thread veins?

Thread veins form when the tiny valves inside capillaries stop working properly, allowing blood to pool and the vessel to stretch permanently. They are driven by:

  • Genetics — some people are simply more prone to them
  • Sun damage — UV weakens the walls of blood vessels over time
  • Ageing — skin naturally thins, making vessels more visible
  • Temperature extremes — repeated flushing from heat or cold
  • Hormones — pregnancy and menopause can trigger them

How IPL treats them

IPL for thread veins and redness uses broad-spectrum light that is absorbed by the haemoglobin in the visible blood vessel. The light heats the vessel until it collapses, and the body then reabsorbs it over the following weeks. The vessel fades gradually — some disappear after one session, others take two or three.

IPL is the most effective non-invasive treatment for facial thread veins and diffuse redness. It is needle-free, involves no downtime, and the discomfort is minimal — a warm snap with each pulse.

What to expect from treatment

A session takes around 20–45 minutes depending on the area. You will feel a quick warmth with each pulse — most people describe it as a light elastic-band flick. There is no anaesthetic needed and no downtime: redness usually settles within hours, and you can return to your normal day straight away.

Treated vessels may darken briefly before they fade — this is normal and shows the treatment worked. A course of 2–4 sessions spaced a few weeks apart is typical for clear results.

Rosacea — honest expectations

If you have rosacea, IPL can make a real difference to the visible redness and discomfort. Many clients find their skin calms noticeably after a course of treatments, and the visible vessels that come with rosacea can be cleared effectively.

But rosacea is a chronic condition. It will not be cured by IPL, and it can flare up again if triggered. Ongoing maintenance sessions, good sun protection, and managing your triggers all play a part. I will always be straight with you about what is realistic before we start.

Pricing

IPL for thread veins and redness starts from £85 per session. A course of 2–4 sessions is typical. Read more on the IPL for thread veins page.
